Shooting short films with the Sony A7s
When Phillip Bloom first reviewed the Sony a7s here, I knew we were witnessing the birth of something special. Aside from a very high ISO (409 600) that this tiny beast is capable of, it has a full frame 35mm sensor! Similar to the Sony F series, this camera shoots in a flat picture profile called S-Gamut and S-Log 2. With an external recorder it can output 4k, sad because the GH4 can do this in-camera, however with the immanent release of the Atomos Shogun, which will undoubtably be a standard on every production set, it doubles as a recorder for all your format requirements to suit your workflow needs especially that allusive 4k and its also a monitor for your camera rig.
This is NOT a action camera! Sony should just print it on the box in bold letters -- BEWARE, ROLLING SHUTTER!
Albeit a tiny camera in comparison to the slick GH4, with 14 stops of dynamic range it smokes most of its competitors with beautiful images in RAW stills and HD XAVC-S format. If you're an elitist or have a huge bank roll, shooting video in Raw 4k via an external recorder will require huge amounts of storage. Considering that you'll need half a terabytes of storage for 25min of uncompressed footage, it is not a viable option for most filmmakers.
Aside from all the specs, which you can scour the internet for more in depth reviews, it is one helluva camera.
